Working as Event Manager for the upcoming Earth Day Celebration, I am besieged by phone calls from the blackberry defenders. They are legion...outraged that we are to pull blackberries out of Jericho Park...(i feel their pain), and the old people from the Quiet Society who call to demand how it is that I believe that AMPLIFIED MUSIC can co-exist with NATURE...and then the others, who just want to rant about Starbucks. This putting-on-of-events thing is a trip. There's a certain illusion of directing chaos that can be dangerously ego-tempting, but i have try to keep just stepping back gently, letting go of the bicycle seat and trusting it won't all crash in a bloody heap. I can't make it happen, I can just allow it to go. Earth Day is a wild ride, into unknown territory...working for a deeply good and inspiring and creative organization (www.evergreen.ca)...which nevertheless is a lumbering ngo/charity with lots of employees and a thorny interdependence on unsavoury corporate concerns...confirming my suspicion that nothing is simple. But there is a beaver living in the pond. And we really will plant over 1,000 plants in the Park this Saturday. And we will dance, for free in Jericho Park, in our bare feet. These are the reasons why. We live in eventful times. (from my Tribe.net blog Thu, April 19, 2007 - 11:18 PM) |
